Thanks for your interest in Walk and Talk therapy. I'm excited to be able to offer an alternative to in-office sessions that has the potential to boost the work we're doing together. Some things you might be wondering:
Where do Walk and Talk sessions take place?
Sessions take place at Seattle area parks. Some have paved walking trails; some are more wooded. We'll talk about a specific meeting place at the time you make your appointment.
What if the weather is bad?
If it's raining any more than a very light drizzle, or there's snow, ice, or other severe weather, we'll meet in my office in Ballard. I'll make an inclement weather call in advance of your appointment and let you know if there's a change in location.
Should I expect a workout?
No! I'm not a fitness trainer and though you will be getting exercise, I wouldn't call this a workout. We'll walk at a pace that's comfortable for you, keeping in mind that the primary purpose of our work is mental health counseling.
Is outdoor therapy confidential?
An important thing to consider before doing Walk and Talk therapy is that you'll be a little more "exposed" than doing therapy in the office. There's a chance that people will overhear us talking, or that we'll be spotted somewhere together. You might run into someone you know, or someone I know who doesn't realize that we're working. If you choose therapy outside of the office, we'll talk about how you want to handle these things if they do happen. Confidentiality is an important part of the therapy process, so it's entirely up to you if you're comfortable with this. We can talk more about it together so that you can make the best possible choice for yourself.
Are there other special considerations when doing therapy outside of the office?
Different environments pose different things to consider. It's possible that if we're doing a walking session you might twist your ankle or get stung by a bee or something like that. It's also important that you're healthy enough for this type of session. I do require that clients complete an additional consent form and waiver of liability before we take therapy outside of the office.
Can you accommodate my physical injury or disability?
Yes. I want "off the couch" / outdoor therapy to be available to anyone who wants it. We can choose locations that you can navigate in a wheelchair or sit on a bench outside if you're injured or not up for walking.
Can I bring my baby? How about my dog?
My priority is providing the best possible therapy session for you. If bringing your baby or dog would be a significant distraction, I would ask you to choose some time for yourself and get childcare/ leave your dog at home. That said, if those things are barriers to you coming to therapy, let's talk about it. Please note that animals (other than service animals) are not allowed in my office building.
